Objectives: Typical reasons why basketball players do not wear mouthguards are: (1) difficulty in speaking (2) difficulty in breathing and (3) inability to drink. The new "Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™, which incorporates a lingual ramp, claims to address and solve these issues. The purpose of the study was to assess the quality and compliance of use of a new mouthguard by an NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Team.

Methods: During the 2015-2106 NCAA College Basketball Season, members of the VCU Men’s Basketball Team voluntarily participated in a 5-month season-long study. The Men’s Basketball Head Athletic Trainer distributed and collected the survey at the End of Week #1 and Week #2 and at the End of Season. ALL questions were completed anonymously; SCALE was based on 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). Note: For the “Ability to Speak”, the “specifics” were: scale of 1 (nobody can understand me) to 5 (***some words*** are hard to understand) to 10 (the same with it in or out). Additionally, without the players’ knowledge, the Head Athletic Trainer recorded the players’ use of the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ during practice sessions and games. The data was analyzed by a person trained in biostatistics.

Results: Among the basketball players, 12 out of 15 participated. Survey results included: (1) “Ability to Speak” were Week #1 – 8.5, Week #2 – 8.0, and End of the Season – 7.7 (2) “Ability to Breathe” were Week #1 – 8.1, Week #2 – 7.8, and End of the Season – 8.4 (3) “Ability to Drink” were Week #1 –8.2, Week #2 – 7.8, and End of the Season – 7.6. Compliance of use results: (1) Players wore the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 93% of the time during practice sessions and games-1,280
out of 1,382 times (2) Players wore the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 100% of the time during games-324 out of 324 times.

Conclusions: The results of these studies demonstrate that the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ allows basketball players to Speak, Breathe, and Drink with Comfort and can be worn comfortably during practices and games.

The surveys were completed at the end of week #1, at the end of week #2 and at the end of the season.

Figure 2. shows that the men’s basketball players had the opportunity to wear the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 1,382 times during games and practice sessions. The players wore the mouthguard 1,280 times. Since mouthguard usage is not required when playing in the sport of basketball, the players voluntarily wore the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 93% of the time.

Since mouthguard usage is not required when playing in the sport of basketball, the players voluntarily wore the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 100% of the time.

Objectives: Mouthguard use is mandatory among Women’s College Field Hockey Players. Athletes have not found a mouthguard which will allow them to Speak, Breathe, and Drink with Comfort. The new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ design, which incorporates a lingual ramp, claims to address these issues. The purpose of the study was to assess the compliance and quality of usage of the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ by NCAA Women’s Division I FHPs.

Materials and Methods: During the 2015-2016 season, nine members of the VCU Women’s Filed Hockey Team voluntarily participated in a 4-month season-long study. These Field Hockey Players were already wearing high-end quality and premier types of mouthguards. Seven were custom-made; two were boil-n-bite. The Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ was custom-made made for each player. The Field Hockey Players had to wear the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ “one time”. Following that, the Field Hockey Players could withdraw at any time from the study. Without the players’ knowledge, the Field Hockey Head Athletic Trainer recorded the players’ use of the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ during practice sessions and games. Additionally, the Head Athletic Trainer distributed and collected a survey: End of Week #1 and Week #2 and at the End of Season. Questions were completed anonymously; SCALE: 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest). Note: For the “Ability to Speak”, “specifics”: 1 (nobody can understand me) to 5 (***some words*** are hard to understand) to 10 (the same with it in or out).

Results: Compliance of use results: (1) Field Hockey Players wore the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 100% of the time during practice sessions and games-416 out of 416 times (2) Players wore the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 100% of the time during games- 139 out of 139 times. No Field Hockey Player stopped using the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ and switched back to their previous mouthguard. Survey results: (1) “Ability to Speak” - Week #1 – 8.8, Week #2 – 8.8, End of the Season – 8.6 (2) “Ability to Breathe” - Week #1 – 8.7, Week #2 – 9.0, End of the Season – 9.0 (3) “Ability to Drink” - Week #1 –8.4, Week #2 – 8.9, End of the Season – 8.8.

Conclusions: The results of these studies were extremely favorable and clearly demonstrate that Women Field Hockey Players were able to Speak, Breathe, and Drink with Comfort while wearing the new Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ and playing their sport.

Figure 2. shows that the women’s field hockey players had the opportunity to wear the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ 416 times during games and practice sessions. The players wore the mouthguard 416 times. The criteria was that the players had to were
the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ one time and then they could drop out of the study and switch back to wearing their previous mouthguard. Each participating player wore the Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™ during the entire length of the study and never switched back to their old type of mouthguard. This was extremely noteworthy because all of the “old type” of mouthguards that the Women’s Field Hockey Players initially were wearing were of “high-end”/“high quality” mouthguards in nature.

Other Clinical Studies were completed among the following athletes:

  • Women's College Lacrosse players
  • Girl's High School Softball player
  • Tampa Bay Rays MLB catcher
  • Alabama High School Footall player
  • Two EXTREME Winter sports athletes
The results of these additional clinical studies were similar to those attained among the Men's Basketball players and the Women's Field Hockey players. The Triple Action Comfort Mouthguard™  continued to allow athletes to Speak, Breathe and Drink with Comfort. The players were able to keep the mouthguard in their mouths for extended periods of time without the need for constant removal.
